It is a byproduct of the milling process used to transform wheat into flour; as such, it is also frequently called Miller's Bran. Fine wheat bran consists of the finer particles sifted from the coarse wheat bran and typically contains a small amount of flour.

Soaking bran in warm water overnight at room temperature helps to deactivate phytates in the bran that may hinder absorption of minerals in the digestive tract.
